    Abstract

    This paper aims at to introduce a method of teaching the short story to non native speakers of Arabic, stemming from the importance of including short stories in foreign language lessons. The first chapter, entitled " The Importance of Literature in Foreign Language Lessons", sheds light on several problematic aspects in this Field. It Addresses the disagreement among linguists and teachers on whether or not literature should be included in foreign language lessons and the extent to which non specialist learners of foreign language actually benefit from learning its literature. The other question the chapter addresses is whether or not languages have forms of literature which are designed for native speakers and others for non natives. This chapter also proposes solutions to some problems related to literary texts and ways by which such texts can be effectively utilized in building and expanding the linguistic competence of learners. The second chapter , entitled:" Linguistic Perspectives In Teaching Short Stories to Non native Spealers of Arabic", presents several theorirical perspectives on how to benefit from the field of linguistics when teaching literature to foreign learners.the chapter also proposes a sample lesson which includes sample tests that measure Arabic linguistic competence.
